Introduction

The Judging and Award Ceremony for Grade 10 learners was conducted in four provinces, namely Free State, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and KwaZulu Natal

Thirty nine schools in total participated in this Challenge.

The Ceremony was a culmination of a range of activities at these schools that started in November 2015, including training, monitoring and support, learner diagnostic assessments and motivational talks.

Challenge Itself

Learners were formed in teams of 5 and were challenged to generate 10 business ideas which would consider originality, creativity and innovation. Certain ideas were excluded from being considered such as car wash, chesa-nyama, taxi operating and hair dressing, for example.

Each of these ideas had to be researched by the teams and had to take into account whether they had the material, the resources or the skills to implement those ideas.

The final 3 ideas were subjected to a SWOT analysis and based on this exercise, they had to make their final business idea choice.

The teams had to also motivate why they considered the final idea to be their best one.

Objectives of the award ceremony

The Absa school entrepreneurship awards was aimed at acknowledging the creativity, innovation and the ability of grade 10 leaners’ to generate business ideas that could make an impact and a difference to business, the community and the broader society.

To motivate learners to consider entrepreneurship as an alternative career option and to instill a culture of self-believe in those wanting to pursue this route.

Judging Process

All entries were adjudicated and the top 2 teams from each school did a 5 minute presentation on their idea at the awards ceremony to make a final impression on the judging panel.

The panel scored each presentation on a scale of 1 to 5 based on presentation, creativity, originality and feasibility of their business ideas.

Prizes Awarded

The top 3 positions were rewarded with the Overall Winning team taking R3000 in cash, First Runners-up R2500 in cash and Second Runners-up R2000 in cash. In addition, the top 3 schools each received a trophy and all participating learners received a certificate in recognition of their participation in the School Entrepreneurship Challenge for 2016.
